Overview

The commercetools Connector connects your storefront to a modern OMS without expensive, high-risk custom development. Key business outcomes include:
  • Faster Time to Market: Replaces complex integration projects to launch omnichannel capabilities quickly.
  • Lower Operational Costs: Automates inventory, order, and master data synchronization to reduce maintenance overhead.
  • Higher Conversions: Displays real-time stock availability and ETAs at checkout to prevent overselling.
  • Efficient Fulfillment: Powers Home Delivery and BOPIS via automated sourcing and stock transfers.

How it Works

The connector acts as an automated bridge that synchronizes catalog, inventory, and order lifecycles between commercetools and Fluent Order Management. This capability is divided into 11 interconnected components that manage specific business workflows:

Navigation and Hierarchy Alignment (Category Sync)

Automates the one-way synchronization of default category structures from the commercetools catalog to the Fluent Order Management category entity type. By keeping core category entities perfectly mirrored across platforms, it guarantees consistent catalog grouping for backend routing rules.

Automated Catalog Export (Product Sync)

Handles the direct export of your digital product catalog from commercetools to Fluent Order Management, supporting both simple and variant product types. It translates your storefront merchandise into accurate standard and variant records in Fluent Order Management while automatically capturing data modifications.

Physical Network Management (Location Sync )

Handles the one-way import of brick-and-mortar location details and physical store sources from Fluent Order Management into commercetools, ensuring the location's name is perfectly mapped within the storefront configuration. This allows system administrators to easily select and toggle which physical retail channels are active and visible to customers for local pickup.

Customer Data and Profile Consolidation (Customer Sync)

When a customer places an order, the Customer Sync process automatically verifies if their profile exists in Fluent Order Management. If a profile is missing, the system generates a new record on the fly to support automated data exchanges and order processing.

Bidirectional Order Orchestration (Order Sync)

Automates data flows by exporting new commercetools orders to Fluent Order Management at checkout and listening for inbound updates. It natively manages complex, split-fulfillment scenarios for Home Delivery and store pickup pathways, using two-way communication to sync created orders and process order-related webhook alerts.

Aggregate Stock Synchronization (Aggregate Inventory Sync)

Transfers total aggregate stock levels (the combined inventory for a product variant across all physical locations) from Fluent Order Management back to commercetools. It holds these synchronized stock counts against your configured storefront channels, feeding accurate availability numbers to your Product Detail Pages (PDP) to prevent overselling.

Centralized Order Milestone Updates (Order Status Updates)

Tracks core fulfillment milestones within Fluent Order Management and pushes those updates directly to commercetools. This ensures both systems remain fully aligned on the current state of the customer order lifecycle.

Granular Line-Item Status Tracking (Fulfillment Updates)

Captures detailed status updates directly from workflows executed within the Fluent Store interface or other integrated networks. It logs these milestones against individual order lines in commercetools, populating metadata tables to display real-time progress for every item in an order.

Automated Shipment and Invoice Generation (Consignment Updates)

Processes inbound fulfillment milestones from Fluent Order Management to automatically generate deliveries within commercetools based on items packed. Once a shipment is ready, it creates the corresponding delivery records, attaches carrier tracking URLs, and updates the order details.

External Webhook Integration Architecture

This architecture serves as the critical entry point for the connector's event-driven synchronization. Within the broader commercetools integration, this component dictates exactly how external webhooks are received and how their underlying JSON payloads are structurally parsed and authenticated.Once a webhook payload clears this ingress layer, the architecture maps its specific event signature and safely drops it into the connector's internal message queues (like the Event Queue). This guarantees that all downstream overarching features—such as the Message Router and the extensible Java handlers—receive clean, standardized data to trigger real-time updates for orders, inventory, or fulfillment states within the commercetools platform.

Who is it For?

This connector is designed for e-commerce directors, retail operations managers, and fulfillment coordinators who need unified control over their omnichannel commerce network and wish to eliminate operational friction between storefront sales and backend logistics.

What Problems Does it Solve?

Integrating commercetools with Fluent Order Management using this connector delivers immediate operational outcomes:
  • Efficiency Gains: Automates manual data entry across products, categories, and inventory counts, reducing staff overhead.
  • Cost Reduction: Minimizes split-shipping costs via intelligent proximity routing and optimizes warehouse space through smart stock transfers.
  • Improved Customer Experience: Boosts buyer confidence by providing accurate delivery timelines and real-time stock availability during checkout.
  • Total Visibility: Equips store managers and administrative teams with granular, line-by-line order fulfillment tracking and centralized system logs directly inside the native storefront interface.

Example

Manage High-Volume Sales Events Across Digital Channels

A North American sportswear retailer utilizes the commercetools Connector to manage high-volume sales events across their digital channels. When a shopper in Chicago places an online order for a jacket and a pair of running shoes using Click and Collect / BOPIS, the connector immediately checks live availability.Because the local Chicago retail store has the shoes but lacks the jacket, the connector automatically routes the order to initiate an internal stock transfer from a nearby fulfillment center to the Chicago store. Simultaneously, a customer in Toronto orders a fitness tracker for home delivery. The connector applies multi-location sourcing rules to split the order, creating two separate shipments from the closest active warehouses. As the warehouse teams pack the items using the Interface tools, the connector pushes real-time consignment updates back to commercetools. This instantly generates delivery parcels and tracking URLs, allowing both customers to view their exact order milestones within their account portals.
